Women’s Care is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Genetic Counselor to join our team. The ideal candidate will provide genetic counseling services to patients and families, assisting them in understanding genetic conditions, risks, and available testing options. This role involves direct patient care, risk assessment, and collaboration with healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care.

About the Role:

The primary focus of our team is prenatal genetics. However, as the only genetic professionals in Lane County, we also offer information to all types of providers. We work closely with the OHSU (Oregon Health and Sciences University) and KDL (Knight Diagnostics Laboratory), where appropriate, for patient care.

This is a full-time opportunity working on-site at our Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinic next to RiverBend Hospital in Springfield, Oregon. We offer attractive pay and a great benefits package.

What will you do:

Patient Assessment and Counseling:

• Collect and analyze family and medical histories to assess the risk of inherited conditions.
• Explain the role of genetics in diseases and conditions in clear, accessible language.
• Provide counseling to patients and families about genetic risks and testing options.
• Analyze patient information and literature to identify conditions patients, or families, are at risk for including specific disorders and syndromes.

Genetic Testing Coordination:

• Explain testing procedures, potential outcomes, limitations, and alternative options to patients (i.e. informed consent).
• Recommend appropriate laboratories and specific test selection.
• Interpret genetic test results for the given situation.
• Communicate test results and their implications for patient care and decision-making to families and partner physicians/providers.

Support and Education:

• Provide emotional support to patients and families coping with genetic risks or diagnoses.
• Educate patients on potential preventative measures, treatment options, and resources.
• Support families in making life-altering decisions.
• Act as a liaison between patients, families, and other healthcare providers.
• Participate in multi-disciplinary case conferences to coordinate patient care.
• Participate in professional organizations and conferences to keep abreast of developments in genetics.

Written Communications:

• Appropriately document all clinical encounters.
• Research skills (self-education) on a variety of topics in relation to genetics.

What do you need to bring to the role:

• Completed the required internship for the genetic program.
• Master’s Degree from a program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC). Must be board eligible or certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling within 18months of hire.
• Must be licensed by the State of Oregon (provisional if necessary) by the time direct patient care is scheduled.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) from AHA required.

Women’s Care was founded in 1988 and is Lane County’s oldest independent physician group specializing in women’s health.
